Faction Playstyle Guide
Pick a faction that fits how you want to win — not a pre-release power chart.
This page is not a traditional S-tier balance chart. Sanctuary: Shattered Sun is pre-release — the July 2026 demo and upcoming Early Access will rewrite unit stats, economy tuning, and matchmaking before any fair “best faction” claim exists. Instead, use this guide to match EDA, the Guard, and the Chosen to how you actually want to play.
How to read these recommendations
We rank fit, not power:
- Primary pick — the faction that most naturally supports the playstyle.
- Secondary pick — viable with different execution.
- Stretch pick — possible but fights your instincts or needs extra skill.
When the game patches, revisit this page — and read individual faction guides for deeper doctrine.
Aggressive / early pressure
| Faction | Fit | Summary |
|---|---|---|
| EDA | Primary | Human mass, artillery timing, and extractor denial sync with rush plans. |
| Guard | Secondary | Swarm floods work once production spins up; weaker in the first minutes. |
| Chosen | Stretch | Elite armies need Flux banks; reckless rushes waste expensive units. |
Aggressive players should master Attack Move and never ignore economy — even rush builds fail without Flux. See the full EDA guide for combined-arms pushes.
Macro / economic scaling
| Faction | Fit | Summary |
|---|---|---|
| EDA | Primary | Efficient throughput and population scaling reward wide expansion. |
| Guard | Primary | Swarm into experiments — economy feeds both quantity and tech swings. |
| Chosen | Secondary | Strong late if you survive; tighter margins while banking Flux. |
Macro lovers should internalize the Flux economy guide before judging factions. Guard and EDA punish idle extractors differently: EDA converts lead into unstoppable mass; Guard converts lead into vision plus prototype timing.
Beginner-friendly
| Faction | Fit | Summary |
|---|---|---|
| EDA | Primary | Clear goals, forgiving losses, straightforward unit roles. |
| Guard | Secondary | Good if you like scouting; multitasking required. |
| Chosen | Stretch | Small armies punish mistakes — better after RTS basics. |
New players: start with how to play the demo, then how to choose a faction, or use the faction picker tool.
Recon and map control
| Faction | Fit | Summary |
|---|---|---|
| Guard | Primary | Superior recon tools and expendable harassment. |
| Chosen | Secondary | Smaller footprint, precise picks on key targets. |
| EDA | Secondary | Wins vision through forward presence if you build for it. |
Information wins Dyson Sphere campaigns where relays and elevation matter. Guard players who never scout still lose — tools do not replace habit.
Defensive / late-game pivot
| Faction | Fit | Summary |
|---|---|---|
| Chosen | Primary | Shields and energy weapons scale into elite defense. |
| EDA | Secondary | Artillery walls and population re-builds stabilize lines. |
| Guard | Secondary | Experiments swing stalemates if economy survives harassment. |
Team games and flex picks
In team modes, complementary pairs often beat triple-stack mirrors:
- EDA + Guard — mass front with recon/backline harassment.
- EDA + Chosen — meat shield plus focus-fire delete.
- Guard + Chosen — vision and precision picking off key targets.
Communication covers vision gaps Chosen players feel solo.
Quick decision flowchart
- Want to attack within ten minutes? Lean EDA.
- Want to see the whole map before fighting? Lean Guard.
- Want every battle decided by micro? Lean Chosen.
- Still unsure? Run the faction picker and play two demo skirmishes per faction.
Pre-release disclaimer
No faction here is permanently “S-tier.” Demo feedback, Chris Taylor’s design iterations, and Flux tuning will shift matchups. Treat this guide as a playstyle compass, not esports gospel. Deep dives: EDA · Guard · Chosen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Why is there no S-tier ranking?
The game is pre-release. Balance patches would make any tier list obsolete weekly. We compare playstyle fit instead.
Best faction for aggressive players?
EDA is the primary pick for early pressure and mass attacks. Guard swarms become aggressive mid-game; Chosen aggression needs setup.
Best faction for beginners?
EDA offers the clearest learning path. Guard is fine if you enjoy scouting. Chosen is better after basic RTS mechanics feel natural.
Best faction for macro players?
EDA and Guard both scale wide economies differently — throughput vs swarm-plus-experiments. Chosen macro is about banking Flux for elite timing.
Will this guide update after Early Access?
Yes. When major patches land, we will revise fit ratings and link updated faction pages — still as playstyle advice, not pro meta tiers.
